Why Do I Have Rats?

The 2 most common species of rats found in the United States are Norway Rats and Roof Rats. Both species have strong senses of smell which will draw them into your home while they search for food. They have been shown to recognize problematic areas which result in them avoiding baits and traps if they are lucky enough to survive an encounter with either. This allows an individual rat to potentially nest and reproduce making a small problem into an infestation that requires professional help.

Roof Rats are smaller black rats with ears that protrude off their heads. They are great climbers that stabilize themselves when climbing using their longer tails. They build nests in areas high above ground like in trees and attics.

Both species cause significant property destruction and are vectors for disease, parasites, and germs. Signs of Rats

Rat Droppings – Rats waste is usually the most apparent sign of a rat problem. These dark rice size pellets tend to be found in rat pathways and under furniture. These pellets will build up quickly and the odor may prompt an investigation if they are left unnoticed.

Rub Marks – Rats follow the same paths which eventually leaves streaks of dirt and grease along baseboards. Signs of these rub marks are usually a good indicator of where to place a snap or sticky trap.

Gnawed Areas – Rats will eat anything in their path when searching for food. This includes metals, framing, plastics, and drywall. If you find signs of little holes with serrated edges, this is usually sign of rats chewing their way through.

Rat Nests – The attic space is the perfect place for a roof rat nest. It gives them access to wall cavities throughout the house that can lead them to food. Rats will use soft materials like newspaper and insulation to create a nest.

Scratching Sounds – Rats are nocturnal and use the inside of walls to travel around houses safely. If rats have infested your home, it is common to hear sounds like scratching and grinding come from within the wall.
